What is the Caritas Sri Lanka?

Caritas Sri Lanka, also known as SEDEC (Social and Economic Development Centre), is the social arm of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Sri Lanka. Established in 1968 by Rev. Fr. Joe Fernando, it operates as the National Secretariat of the Commission for Justice, Peace, and Human Development. Affiliated with Caritas Internationalis—a global confederation of Catholic relief, development, and social service organizations—Caritas Sri Lanka is dedicated to promoting justice, peace, and integral human development across the nation.

The organization's mission focuses on empowering individuals and communities through various programs, including disaster relief, development initiatives, and advocacy efforts. Guided by Catholic social teachings, Caritas Sri Lanka serves people in need regardless of race, religion, caste, or gender. Its vision is to realize a just Sri Lankan society based on Gospel values of love, forgiveness, peace, unity, and equality.
